Mid-19th century. Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Red Belt) is an intelligent black man who is a musician in New York. He lives peacefully with his family and is proud to be free and to be able to do what he loves. However, everything will change radically for Solomon when one day two co-workers set him up. From that moment on, the civilized society in which he thought he lived will completely collapse when he realizes that he has been captured to be sold as a labor force to work in the Deep South, in the plantations of Louisiana. All his efforts to maintain his independence have collapsed and now his life has become a nightmare.

In his new prison, Solomon will discover the suffering, pain and violence, the subjugation of his fellow workers and the desperation of a whole collective that does not dare to raise its voice. It will be then that he will decide to take control of the situation and, with patience and sanity, to do his best to survive and one day be able to be reunited with his loved ones.
