"There were only two kinds of neighbors in our town [...] The stupid and the rednecks and those who are not able to leave or are too clumsy to do so". So begins Beautiful Creatures, the big screen adaptation of The Saga of the Sixteen Moons. The story is set in Gatlin, a South Carolina town that has neither Starbucks nor McDonald's, where the library still uses paper tokens, the movie theater releases movies that come out at the same time on DVD, and the municipal swimming pool is Lake Moultrie. However, all is not as it seems, as Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich, Somewhere), a high school student at Summerville College who starts having strange dreams about an unknown girl, begins to realize. Ethan's life is monotonous and boring. He plays basketball for fun and in high school he has to pretend he doesn't like reading and pretend classes don't matter to him while reading Silver Star comics. Everything changes when the mysterious Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert, Ginger & Rose) arrives at Gatlin and Ethan discovers she is the girl of his dreams in every way. She wears a pair of worn-out Converse like him, doesn't dress fashionably like the rest of the high school girls and carries a strange pendant with orangeade tabs, crosses, stones and raven-shaped figures. The whole school picks on her for being the niece of Macon Ravenwood (Jeremy Irons, The Borgias), the town hermit, but Ethan can't help but be attracted to the new girl, even after she confesses to him that she's a Caster or, as mortals say, a witch.
