The Bionic Commando series may be unfamiliar to many new gamers who today use home consoles as their primary entertainment medium. Born in the late eighties for the now-defunct arcades, Capcom proposed an unusual adventure to the world, combining action and platforming that worked perfectly, gradually becoming a beloved game among gamers.
Although the series has remained in evident dormancy, it is worth noting that games based on the franchise appeared for both Nintendo's first home console (one of the most well-known) and handhelds, though the latter went largely unnoticed in the market. However, last year, Capcom decided to revive the franchise by commissioning GRIN to adapt the original for the digital platforms of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, along with a direct sequel for the most powerful consoles on the market. Bionic Commando returns in a big way with a brand new adventure that will undoubtedly leave no one indifferent.
We Need You, Spencer
Much time has passed since the last Bionic Commando, so much so that even the adventure's protagonist, Nathan Spencer, has spent more than ten years in prison serving a sentence simply for following his superiors' orders - in times of war, murders are commonplace. It seems that despite the success his powerful arm had in rescuing Super Joe in the previous game, all the bionic soldiers who helped the country have been labeled criminals, imprisoned, killed, and even sentenced to death, as is the case with our protagonist. Our particular hero has spent ten years locked up, and just at the moment of his execution, the country's top officials need his help and his most precious component, his mechanical arm, as it appears that a terrorist group has destroyed all the peace and harmony that reigned in Ascension City, collapsing all buildable structures and spreading radioactive gases, wiping out all human life.
The game's storyline develops as our adventure progresses, being narrated in the form of fairly frequent, albeit scarce, cinematics, as most of the game will be spent talking by radio with Super Joe (whom we rescued in the original work and who subsequently imprisoned us) and his superiors. What seems like a simple adventure - eliminating an existing enemy threat - gradually turns into a series of betrayals, unexpected encounters with friends and enemies, and a moral dilemma between defending the country that betrayed you or repaying them in kind. A well-crafted storyline that will keep the player in suspense from the very beginning.
New Arm, New Dimension
As mentioned, our hero was separated from his mechanical component for ten years, so his skills and synchronization with the heavy parts are rather limited in the first encounter. We will try to gain control as soon as possible, but it should be noted that the control may seem difficult at first, as there are many button combinations and the grip perspective is not very clear. Even so, we will have access to the first tutorial shortly after starting the game, just when we find the bionic arm, controlling, curiously, the Nathan Spencer from the original game in a series of virtual reality missions to familiarize ourselves with the game's controls.
The game takes place in an open three-dimensional environment, which, although at first, it seems to offer clear and functional freedom, much like Grand Theft Auto or similar games, the path is actually quite predetermined, including hidden places and so on, but diminishing the sense of freedom from the early stages of the adventure. It is true that we can wander around the city section we are in, but there are dangers - like radiation or water - that will force us to retreat and follow the predetermined path on the map. Thus, once the first hour of the game is completed, we will have more or less knowledge of how to use this lethal weapon, both to defeat enemies and to support ourselves in the environment and advance in the adventure.
