House of Cards is a Netflix original drama series that follows Democratic Party politician Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) as he attempts to achieve high office in the Washington political sphere. Underwood is the House Majority Whip in Congress and the epitome of American ambition and idiosyncrasies. As a political pundit, charismatic man and unscrupulous strategist, Francis and his equally ambitious wife Claire (Robin Wright) will not hesitate to manipulate and lie to climb the ladder and accomplish their goals. To achieve these goals, Francis enters into a tortuous relationship with young journalist Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara), thanks to which he manages to maintain his influence in the party through the press. However, it is a risky plan: if his dealings with the reporter are discovered, his relationship with his wife (Robin Wright) is not the only thing that could end badly, but also his political career. Based on the British fiction of the same name, this version of House of Cards is created by showrunner and screenwriter Beau Wilimon (The Ides of March). Unlike the British version, whose story was set in Margaret Thatcher's first government, this series is set in contemporary Washington.
