Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr., 'Chaplin'), owner of Stark Industries, an accomplished inventor, arms dealer and billionaire playboy, is kidnapped in Afghanistan after a weapons demonstration for the U.S. Army. Forced by his captors to manufacture a fearsome weapon, he ends up secretly building a revolutionary high-tech armor that he uses to escape. When he realizes the armor's great potential, he decides to revise it to improve it and, thus, use it to guard justice and protect the innocent. After being rescued by James Rhodes (Terrence Howard, 'Crash'), he decides to disassociate himself from the production of military weaponry, which puts the family business to shame. Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges, 'The Big Lebowski'), the manager of the company, warns him that this decision could lead to ruin.

Toni learns that several of his company's weapons have reached the terrorist group that kidnapped him in Afghanistan. He asks his secretary, "Pepper" Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow, 'Shakespeare in Love'), to hack into his own company's information system to discover who has allowed such activities. They eventually discover that Stane himself is leading a double life, attempting to reproduce Toni's robotic armor for his own benefit, so they will have to stop him.
