Created by Theresa Rebeck ('Law & Order: Criminal Action', 'New York Cops'), produced by Steven Spielberg ('Falling Skies', 'Terra Nova') and directed by Michael Mayer ('Flicka', 'A House at the End of the World'), 'Smash' narrates the entire process of a musical comedy, from the birth of the original idea to its premiere in style. And there's nothing like savoring the opening night of a Broadway musical... Except, perhaps, realizing all that goes on behind the scenes: jealousies, passions, egos, marathon rehearsals and lots and lots of creativity. While 'Wicked' and 'The Lion King' continue to win over theater audiences, Julia (Debra Messing, 'Will and Grace,' 'And Then She Came,' 'The Wedding Day') and Tom (Christian Borle, 'Ex-Wed'), a team of successful librettists, are hard at work on a new musical centered on the life of actress Marilyn Monroe. And when a tenacious and manic producer (Angelika Houston, 'The Addams Family', 'Forever and Ever', 'Medium') joins the project, the nerves of hiring a star and the endless acting, voice and casting tests begin.
