This HBO fiction is written and created by Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing) and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre). Each season will focus on a different case, led and starring a different group of detectives. The first season of True Detective centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, whose lives will intersect when a case about a bizarre 17-year-old murder is reopened. To do so, several timelines will be used to show the two detectives' hunt for the killer. In 2012, the two Louisiana precinct detectives are brought in to examine a homicide case they worked on in 1995. As the investigation unfolds in our day through separate interrogations, the two former detectives will narrate the story of their investigation, the reopening of unhealed wounds and being tried for solving an outlandish 1995 murder. By telling about what happened, they will learn about each other and their killer and it will become clear that darkness lives on both sides of the law.

This first batch of episodes stars Matthew McConaughey (Mud) and Woody Harrelson (Zombieland) as the series' detectives. Also in the cast is Michelle Monaghan (Trapped in the Dark) who plays Martin Hart's wife, trying to keep her family together while her husband is focused on a cycle of obsession and violence.
